KCU works to promote equity in business and support a diverse local economy by fostering community and business relationships with small and/or diverse businesses. It is KCU’s intent to provide small and/or diverse local businesses an equal opportunity to compete for the opportunity to provide goods and services to KCU.

The business and supplier diversity initiative will provide the guidance and leadership to position KCU as a recognized national leader in developing a diverse supplier base.

Policy Statement

KCU is committed to providing a professionally inclusive environment within which small and/or diverse businesses are encouraged to participate in the procurement experience, as they are afforded equal access to the process that transfers goods and services to its campus communities.

KCU acknowledges that by ensuring that small and/or diverse businesses are provided a fair and equitable opportunity to bid on products and services procured by the University, a valuable exchange can occur whereby those businesses are encouraged to offer quality goods and services, and University departments are provided a more widely diverse group of business enterprises from which to choose, receiving more competitive pricing, and contributing to the long-term sustainability of those same businesses.

How KCU Defines a Diverse Supplier

Businesses owned by minorities, women, disabled, veterans and service disabled veterans, and members of the LGBTQ community.   

Minority Owned Business: A business that is at least 51 percent owned by an individual(s) who is Black American, Hispanic American, Native American, Asian-Pacific American, or Subcontinent-Asian American. For more information, visit the National Minority Supplier Development Council website.

Women-Owned Business: A business that is at least 51 percent owned by one or more women, and whose management and daily operations are controlled by one or more women. In the case of publicly owned businesses, at least 51percent of the stock must be owned by non-minority women. For more information, visit the Women's Business Enterprise National Council website.

Disabled-Owned Business: A business that is at least 51 percent owned by one or more disabled persons, and whose management and daily operations are controlled by one or more disabled persons. In the case of publicly owned businesses, at least 51 percent of the stock must be owned by disabled persons.

Veteran-Owned Business: A business that is at least 51 percent owned by one or more veterans or, in the case of any publicly owned business, not less than 51 percent if the stock of which is owned by one or more veterans and the management and daily business operations of which are controlled by one or more veterans. Service-Disabled-Veteran-Owned Business: A business that is at least 51 percent owned by one or more service-disabled veterans or, in the case of any publicly owned business, not less than 51 percent of the stock of which is owned by one or more service-disabled veterans, and the management and daily business operations of which are controlled by one or more service-disabled veterans or in the case of a permanent and severe disability, the spouse or permanent caregiver of such veteran. LGBTQ-Owned Business: A business that is at least 51 percent owned by one or more persons in the LGBTQ community, and whose management and daily operations are controlled by one or more persons in the LGBTQ community. In the case of publicly owned businesses, at least 51 percent of the stock must be owned by persons in the LGBTQ community.
