Core Site assignments are for year three only. Clerkship placement during year four is based solely on the site’s availability and approval. Students must follow the scheduling protocols outlined by the location and the Clinical Education Guidelines.

Our NJ/NY clinical campus is a large consortium of multiple hospitals and office facilities for third-year and fourth-year medical students. It offers a dynamic and immersive learning environment as students rotate through various hospitals and clinics. This campus is designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world medical practice, providing hands-on experience in diverse clinical settings. Students have the opportunity to work alongside experienced healthcare professionals, engage with patients, and participate in multidisciplinary teams. The curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, patient care, and professional development, ensuring that students build the necessary skills and knowledge for their future medical careers. Supportive faculty and mentors guide students throughout their rotations, fostering a collaborative and enriching educational experience.

Third-Year Clerkships

  • Family Medicine (4 weeks)
  • Internal Medicine (8 weeks)
  • Ob/Gyn (4 weeks)
  • Pediatrics (4 weeks)
  • Psychiatry (4 weeks)
  • Surgery (8 weeks)

This site schedules clinical experiences in 4-week increments.

Third-Year Selectives

  • These are clinical experiences completed in addition to the third-year core clerkships.  The student may have some ability to choose from a list of available selective clerkships.  The Core Site determines the selective clerkships available based on the resources at the Core SiteIf applicable, selective opportunities will be communicated to students at the core site’s discretion after the match.

  • Selective clerkship opportunities are not available away from the Core Site during the third year.  Exceptions to this policy may occur for students officially enrolled in the Military and Global Health Tracks.

Duties & Opportunities

  • Student Duties: Students are required to participate in daily patient rounds
  • Didactic Opportunities: Students are required to participate in weekly didactics

Unique Site Characteristics

  • Background check and drug screen required annually
  • BLS and ACLS certifications must be current
  • Physical Exam required annually
  • Global Track and Military Track students must communicate third-year clerkship obligations to site as soon as the Clerkship Match Process is finalized
  • TB screening required annually (only two-step skin test or blood test accepted)
  • Weekly COMLEX/STEP2 and shelf exam prep built in
Once the Clerkship Site Match is finalized for your class, KCU Clinical Education will notify students when contacting clerkship sites directly is permitted.
