KCU Academic Center Recognized by AIA for Design

The Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences’ (KCU) newly renovated Academic Center has been recognized by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Central States Region at their annual Excellence in Design Awards. KCU partnered with Helix Architecture + Design on the design and construction of the
Academic Center.

Hahn, DO, president and chief executive officer of KCU. “Helix Architecture + Design has been a true partner throughout this undertaking, as they understand the needs of our students and embrace our vision.”

The renovated Academic Center was recognized due to its complete transformation from the original structure, Weaver Auditorium, into a state-of-the-art learning facility and hub for student activity. The design team from Helix developed the concept of stacking two lecture halls within the original footprint of the auditorium. This design concept enabled builders to repurpose more than 90 percent of materials from the original auditorium and focus on sustainability. The Academic Center, located at Independence and Highland Avenues in Kansas City, Missouri’s, historic Northeast Neighborhood, is part of KCU’s five-year Campus Master Plan.

The 2015 AIA Central States design award jury was comprised of nationally recognized designers. The KCU Academic Center was previously recognized with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification for commercial interiors.
