Kansas City University (KCU) has partnered with Care Beyond the Boulevard, a nonprofit dedicated to providing health care for underserved Kansas City communities, to offer its clinical psychology (PsyD) students hands-on training under the guidance of KCU alumnus Tyler Staples, PsyD.

KCU’s Benjamin Grin, assistant professor of primary care who also serves as chief medical officer for the Kansas City Health Department, spoke during the business session of the Kansas City Council meeting about the impact of Missouri’s rising cases of congenital syphilis infections and the lack of prenatal care. 

Demand for mental and behavioral health providers is expected to grow by 22 percent by the year 2031—much faster than the average for all other occupations. As the United States experiences a severe shortage of mental health professionals, Kansas City University offers a doctorate of clinical psychology program to meet the growing need.

Dr. Strickland knows firsthand the value of investing in students and has a deep desire to pay forward the generosity he has received. He and his wife, Suzanne, recently funded two additional endowed scholarships bringing the total number of scholarships generously given to KCU to 34.

John Paulson, DO, PhD, is chair and associate professor of Primary Care on the KCU-Joplin campus. Before joining KCU, he interned with the FBI, went up against designer drugs and helped bring a child's murderer to justice.
