Ascension Via Christi Wichita


Core Site assignments are for year three only. Clerkship placement during year four is based solely on the site’s availability and approval. Students must follow the scheduling protocols outlined by the location and the Clinical Education Guidelines.

Ascension Via Christi is the largest privately owned, not-for-profit medical center in the region. There are two acute-care hospitals: Ascension Via Christi St. Francis and Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph; a behavioral health campus, rehabilitation hospital, home health agency and outpatient services at several satellite locations.

The Medical Center has a reputation for excellence in many areas including burn care; behavioral health and addiction; cancer; cardiovascular disease; diabetes; emergency medicine; gerontology; neuroscience; orthopedics and sports medicine; rehabilitation; surgery; heart, kidney and pancreas transplantation; Level I (highest level) trauma; Level III (highest level) NICU; women’s health; research; and education and wellness. There are 1,532 licensed beds, more than 4,000 employees and 800 active physicians on staff.

This site schedules clinical experiences in four-week increments.

Third-Year Selectives

  • These are clinical experiences completed in addition to the third-year core clerkships.  The student may have some ability to choose from a list of available selective clerkships.  The Core Site determines the selective clerkships available based on the resources at the Core SiteIf applicable, selective opportunities will be communicated to students at the core site’s discretion after the match.

  • Selective clerkship opportunities are not available away from the Core Site during the third year.  Exceptions to this policy may occur for students officially enrolled in the Military and Global Health Tracks or completing third-year selective(s) away from the Core Site as part of the Specialty Track requirements.

Duties & Opportunities

  • Student Duties: Students are required to participate in weekly rounds, night call and weekend rounds as assigned
  • Didactic Opportunities: Students are required to participate in weekly didactics - depending on the clerkship
  • OMT/OPP Opportunities: Students are required to participate monthly

Unique Site Characteristics

  • Regional Assistant Dean Personal Statement and potential Skype interview with Program Director required for Clerkship Match
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) required for Clerkship Match
  • COVID Vaccine is required to rotate at Ascension Via Christi facilities
  • Drug Screen required annually
  • Global Track and Military Track students must communicate third-year clerkship obligations to site as soon as the Clerkship Match Process is finalized
  • Orientation provided prior to the first clerkship
  • Physical examination required annually
  • TB screening required annually (only two-step skin test or blood test accepted, blood test preferred)
